Training 1: Understanding and structuring strategic litigation

This section introduces the concept of strategic litigation and its potential to turn individual cases of injustice into wider legal and social change. You will learn how litigation can complement advocacy, evidence gathering, media work and policy reform. You may also explore how to identify the right problem, define strategic objectives and choose an appropriate legal route.

The training also highlights the importance of building the right legal, expert and advocacy support around a case. It addresses potential legal, strategic and client-related risks, as well as the support needed throughout the process.Through real case examples and practical exercises, participants learn how strategic litigation can challenge discriminatory laws, policies and practices.

Ultimately, strategic litigation is presented as a process of choosing the right case, with the right support, for the right change.
